Scotland has recently announced its Zero Waste Plan - a radical strategic outlook whereby waste is considered a resource which is managed to enhance current economic growth and future national prosperity. Two key objectives outlined are a recycling target of 70 per cent target for all waste with a minimum 5 per cent of waste sent to landfill, both by 2025. The Scottish government is keen to apply carbon measurement techniques to identify potential opportunities to reduce the adverse impact of waste on the environment and its contribution to climate change.Included in the plan are restrictions on the use of waste in energy to waste schemes with emphasis being placed on waste prevention and efficient use of resources
This plan was unfurled with little fanfare or hype but its potential consequences to the way Scottish business currently operate is yet to be understood by Scottish CEOs and business leaders.
